How to Fix McAfee Installation Problems

Fix frozen, incomplete, or failed McAfee installations, including error code 0, by removing conflicting antivirus software and cleaning previous McAfee components with MCPR.

When to use this solution: follow these steps when McAfee cannot be installed correctly, including error code 0, frozen installations, incomplete setups, repeated failures, or conflicts caused by files from a previous antivirus installation.

Common McAfee installation problems

McAfee installation problems can appear in several ways, such as error code 0, an installer that freezes or closes unexpectedly, an incomplete installation, or repeated failures. These issues commonly occur when an earlier McAfee installation was not removed completely, another antivirus conflicts with the installer, or a previous attempt left damaged files.

1. Remove existing antivirus software

Before trying again, uninstall any antivirus currently installed on the PC, including older McAfee products or security software from another provider. Keeping two antivirus products installed at the same time can block drivers and services required by McAfee.

Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps to remove the existing antivirus, then close all open programs.

2. Restart the PC

Restart Windows after uninstalling the antivirus. This releases active services and completes any pending file removal before the cleanup tool runs.

3. Run the McAfee MCPR tool as administrator

Download the official McAfee Consumer Product Removal (MCPR) tool using the button below.

Locate MCPR.exe, right-click it, and select Run as administrator. Approve the Windows prompt, accept the license terms, and follow the instructions shown by the tool.

Run MCPR as administrator and follow the removal wizard.

Wait while MCPR searches for and removes remaining McAfee files, services, and installation data. Do not close the program while cleanup is in progress.

Continue only after MCPR confirms that the cleanup completed successfully.

A successful completion message confirms that the remaining McAfee components were removed.

4. Restart the PC again

Restart Windows once more after MCPR finishes. This restart is required to complete the removal of services and files that were in use.

5. Install McAfee again

Download a fresh copy of your McAfee installer and run it as administrator. Keep the internet connection active and allow the installation to finish before opening other security software.

If error code 0 or another installation failure continues after completing every step, confirm that Windows is fully updated and temporarily disable any VPN or network filtering software before trying again.
