A Confirmation ID (CID) is the set of numbers Microsoft uses to complete telephone activation after your software shows an Installation ID (IID). This article explains how to request that CID through Microsoft’s free official portal.

What you need before requesting a CID
- The Microsoft activation wizard open on the screen that shows the Installation ID.
- The complete Installation ID (IID), copied exactly in the order shown on screen.
- An internet connection to open the Microsoft Product Activation Portal.
- A few minutes to copy the returned Confirmation ID into the activation window.
1. Open telephone activation and copy the Installation ID
In Office, Visio, or Project, open an application such as Word, enter your product key, and choose telephone activation when online activation is not completed automatically. For Windows, open the activation wizard and continue until the Installation ID is displayed.
The next screen shows the Installation ID. This number is usually split into several groups. Copy every group carefully, from left to right, because the Microsoft portal needs the complete IID to generate the Confirmation ID.
For Windows 10 or Windows 11, copy the Installation ID from the Windows telephone activation window. The idea is the same: keep every group in order, then use that complete IID in the Microsoft portal.
2. Open the official Microsoft Product Activation Portal
Search for the official Microsoft Product Activation Portal or open Microsoft’s visual support activation page. This is the free manual option for getting a Microsoft Confirmation ID. It is best for occasional activations when you do not mind entering the IID groups yourself.
Sign in to the Microsoft Product Activation Portal with a Microsoft account, such as an Outlook or Hotmail account. After signing in, click Activate a Microsoft Product. Then select the product family that best matches what you are activating. For Office, Visio, and Project, choose Office, then select the matching Office year or the closest available version, such as Office 2021 or Office 2024. Continue until the portal asks for the Installation ID.
3. Submit the Installation ID
Paste or type the complete Installation ID into the portal. Keep the group order exactly the same as the activation wizard. If the portal asks how many computers are using this copy and this is a new activation, enter 0 and continue.
4. Copy the Confirmation ID returned by Microsoft
After the Installation ID is accepted, the portal returns a Confirmation ID. The CID is also divided into groups. Copy each group into the matching field in your activation wizard, then continue to finish activation.
When the free Microsoft CID method is enough
The official Microsoft portal is a good choice when you only need one Confirmation ID, can copy the Installation ID manually, and have enough time to check each group. It is free, official, and works well for many standard phone activation cases.
If the portal rejects the Installation ID, recheck the product key, product version, and every IID group. A wrong digit, a mismatched edition, or an already invalid key can prevent Microsoft from returning a CID.
